Senate votes to confirm Kirstjen Nielsen as the new DHS secretary

The Senate confirmed Kirstjen Nielsen as the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on a 62-37 vote on Tuesday.

Several Democrats joined all Republicans in voting to approve the nomination, including Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs ranking member Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE). Carper voted against Nielsen in committee.

“Kirstjen Nielsen’s experience in both the public and private sectors makes her the right person to lead this department,” homeland security Chairman Ron Johnson (R-WI) said....
