Senate Democrats offer measure establishing ‘reasonable duties’ for securing data from website and app users

A group of 19 Senate Democrats including leaders on cyber and consumer issues has reintroduced a bill that would establish a “duty of care” for “online companies,” with data security, breach notification and other requirements in the legislation.

The “Data Care Act” was introduced Thursday by Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) and aims to “establish duties for online service providers with respect to end user data that such providers collect and use.”
