Commerce official lays out regulatory schedule on export controls for new technologies

The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security hopes to issue an advance notice of proposed rulemaking on export controls for foundational technologies by the end of the calendar year, and regulations on emerging technologies “shortly,” a BIS official said on Tuesday.

The landmark regulatory effort is intended to define emerging technologies -- such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing -- for the purpose of imposing export controls based on national security concerns.
