Partisan divides emerge over inclusion of commercial trucks in auto bill addressing cyber

Senate Democrats are raising concerns about forthcoming legislation on self-driving vehicles, saying cybersecurity in commercial trucks may need to be addressed separately from automobiles, while Republicans say the same standards and regulations can apply to both.

Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) said during a Senate Commerce Committee hearing Wednesday on self-driving trucks that commercial vehicles raise different concerns than consumer automobiles, and therefore may require specific legislation. He cited cybersecurity threats as one of the potential risks requiring additional considerations.
