NHTSA lays out steps to secure cars from cyber threats in draft 'V2V' rule

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is employing a cybersecurity and privacy-by- design approach in draft regulations mandating automakers integrate “vehicle-to-vehicle” communications technology into their vehicles.

According to the proposed rule language released today as part of NHTSA's “V2V” rule, the administration will follow a “security and privacy by design through a message authentication” approach to protect data being transmitted between vehicles and infrastructure. Such transmissions will allow vehicles to act on information to improve driver safety.
