House passes software security bills to address asset management efforts, code sharing needs

The House has advanced two bills addressing federal software security efforts through requiring an inventory of software assets used by agencies and requiring agencies to share source code to prevent duplication.

The “Strengthening Agency Management and Oversight of Software Assets Act” from Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA) would direct each agency CIO to conduct a “comprehensive assessment of the software paid for by, in use at, or deployed throughout the agency,” according to the bill.
