Communications sector groups push back against FCC cyber proposals for emergency alert systems

Major groups representing the communications sector are urging the FCC to rethink a proposed rule for emergency alert system participants that includes requirements such as creation of a cybersecurity risk management plan and reporting of cyber incidents impacting equipment and services.

The Federal Communications Commission’s notice of proposed rulemaking would require EAS participants to report incidents within 72 hours of occurrence. The deadline to submit initial comments ended on Dec. 23 and the commission is accepting reply comments through...
