United Nations adopts combatting cybercrime agreement opposed by several stakeholders

The United Nations General Assembly has formally approved the final text of a new international agreement to address cybercrime, despite pushback from United States stakeholders who expressed concerns over surveillance implications.

“The UN Convention against Cybercrime aims to prevent and combat cybercrime more efficiently and effectively, including by strengthening international cooperation and by providing technical assistance and capacity-building support, particularly for developing countries,” the UN said in a Dec. 24 release on adoption.
