Submarine cable industry urges FCC to avoid expanding license regime, as others offer targeted national security updates

A coalition for the submarine cable industry is asking the Federal Communications Commission to avoid expanding the current licensing regime for undersea cables due to the regulatory burden, while other stakeholders offer suggestions to address national security and evolving threats in the past two decades.

The Submarine Cable Coalition responded to an FCC notice of proposed rulemaking approved on Nov. 21 to conduct a “comprehensive review” of its licensing rules for submarine cables, which would update the application requirements...
