Sen. Peters opens investigation on cryptocurrency role in ransomware attacks

Senate Homeland Security Chairman Gary Peters (D-MI) is launching a “bipartisan” investigation into how cryptocurrency is used for “emboldening and incentivizing cybercriminals” who conduct ransomware attacks.

“My investigation will help us better understand how cryptocurrency can embolden cybercriminals, and identify possible policy changes that would help disrupt the incentive cryptocurrencies provide for criminal organizations and foreign adversaries to target critical public and private sector systems,” Peters said today.
