ITIF warns in research report: Annual cost of national privacy law could reach $122 billion

The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation says enactment of a national data privacy law similar to California or European requirements would cost the U.S. economy $122 billion each year, while acknowledging inaction by Congress would lead to a patchwork of state-level regulations.

“The debate now is not over whether to pass new legislation, but how to design such a law to both protect consumers and encourage continued innovation,” says ITIF in a report issued Monday.
