Insurers clash with automakers in support for California cyber rules for connected cars

The insurance industry is backing proposed rules by the California Department of Motor Vehicles that would require cybersecurity certifications for self-driving automobiles prior to deployment.

The industry’s support for the California plan is in sharp contrast with criticism by automakers who say the rules would encroach on the authority of federal regulators. The proposed rules have attracted national attention because of the size of the California market in setting what could be seen as de facto national standard.
