HHS proposes revamp of HIPAA security rules to address cybersecurity for electronic health information

The Department of Health and Human Services has proposed rules to put in place cyber requirements for the healthcare sector to protect electronic protected health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

The notice of proposed rulemaking would make amendments to the HIPAA Security Rule, which was last updated in 2013. The HHS Office of Civil Rights released the 393-page NPRM on Dec. 27. It is scheduled for Jan. 6 publication in the Federal Register, with a...
