GAO: Pentagon neglects cybersecurity in weapons programs, resulting in higher costs and delays

The Pentagon often fails to include cybersecurity as a key requirement in its major weapons developments, with some programs facing the prospect of increased costs and schedule delays after neglecting software and security early in system development, according to a recent audit.

In its annual report on major Defense Department acquisition programs released last week, the Government Accountability Office said DOD has begun emphasizing cybersecurity measures, but program implementation is "inconsistent," even as weapon systems are increasingly networked.
