FCC approves rules to restrict components of equipment posing national security risks under authorization ban

The Federal Communications Commission has unanimously approved rules to add “modular transmitters” to a list of covered equipment banned in the United States due to national security risks, filling a loophole on device components in the equipment authorization process.

“Many of these devices are closely tied to foreign adversaries, like China, and can allow the CCP to surveil Americans, disrupt communications networks, and otherwise threaten U.S. national security,” according to an Oct. 28 release from the FCC.
