Automakers fear state regulators will mandate use of voluntary NHTSA cyber standards

The automotive industry is worried that state governments will take the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's new voluntary policy on automated vehicles and set mandatory cybersecurity requirements.

According to comments from the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers submitted to NHTSA last week on the recently issued policy, automakers are concerned that state-by-state mandates might emerge for both the testing and use of self-driving vehicles.
