NHTSA issues autonomous-vehicle policy addressing cybersecurity

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a new policy on autonomous vehicles addressing cybersecurity concerns, a document that industry believes will guide the work of the incoming Trump administration in this area.

The new policy calls for a “robust product development process” for self-driving vehicles in order to minimize safety risks, including those from cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Such a process should include “systematic and ongoing” safety risk assessments for the vehicles and the broader connected transportation ecosystem.
