British lawmakers urge tougher fines, more legal redress for data breaches

A new report by a British House of Commons committee recommends that regulators be given more authority to force cybersecurity audits for healthcare and other industry sectors and that consumers be ensured greater legal options for compensation from data breaches.

The report also recommends that companies and organizations get control of their supply chains, noting that a 2016 data-breach report found only a third of organizations had cybersecurity standards in place to address third-party vulnerabilities.
