Supreme Court may be next stop for data-breach case after circuit denies rehearing

A data-breach case ruling that set a relatively low bar for plaintiffs to show that they had been harmed could be headed to the Supreme Court after the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals last week rejected a request by Nationwide Mutual Insurance for a rehearing by the full court.

The case, if it winds up before the high court, could set a precedent on the data-security responsibilities of companies to protect their customers.
