EU advocate general says UK data rules meet privacy requirements

The European Court of Justice's advocate general, in a non-binding opinion, says the United Kingdom's data retention rules – intended to help law enforcement  officials – appear to be consistent with strict European Union privacy rules so long as rigorous oversight is maintained.

The opinion, which makes similar findings for Sweden's data rules, has attracted widespread attention in the wake of the Brexit vote as a signal of how the U.K. might fare if it seeks to be deemed adequate...
