Thune says privacy advocates must help draft data bill not expected to move until next year

Senate Commerce Chairman John Thune (R-SD) this week extended an invitation to privacy advocates in drafting legislation for a national data standard, even while movement on such legislation is not expected until next year.

Thune said the interests of internet companies would not be enough to propel legislation that seeks consistency amid an emerging patchwork of requirements by states and internationally, in particular by California and the European Union.
