Senate Judiciary to examine bill barring entry to foreign nationals engaged in U.S. election interference

The Senate Judiciary Committee will mark up legislation Thursday that would prohibit foreign actors who interfere in U.S. elections from entering the country, while stopping short of imposing sanctions.

The Defending Elections Against Trolls from Enemy Regimes Act, or the DETER Act, was introduced by Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) in April. It would designate “foreign persons who improperly interfere in United States elections as inadmissible aliens."
