State Department official warns EU privacy rules could thwart cyber-threat investigations

A leading State Department official warned of “unintended consequences” from upcoming European Union regulations, which are intended to protect personal information but could thwart investigators in identifying and responding to cyber threats.

“We see cybersecurity and digital economic issues as two halves of the same coin,” said Robert Strayer, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for cyber and international communications and information policy, on Wednesday.
