NHTSA delays regulation for connected cars amid industry's cybersecurity concerns

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has delayed a regulation for vehicle-to-vehicle “V2V” communications devices in automobiles, as industry and other key stakeholders questioned the adequacy of provisions to address cybersecurity and privacy concerns.

NHTSA has classified the V2V rulemaking, which was first announced in 2014 and would mandate use of technology allowing vehicles to transmit safety information to each other and to connected infrastructure, as a “long-term action,” meaning no regulatory actions are expected within the next year, according...
