House panel considers ways to provide consumers control over data in privacy bill discussion

Addressing consumer consent and small business considerations dominated a House hearing on a new bipartisan proposal that seeks to break a years-long deadlock over how to establish a national data privacy law.

“This legislation represents a fundamental shift in how data is collected, used, and transferred. It rejects the coercive ‘notice and consent’ system that has totally failed to protect Americans’ data privacy and security,” said House Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) at a Tuesday hearing.
