Commerce offers case-by-case approach to ICT security, plus an opening for industry input

The Commerce Department eased some industry worries by following through with a case-by-case approach to considering security risks embedded in information and communications technology transactions, and also by seeking public engagement before finalizing its ICT supply-chain security rule.

The proposed regulation, required under President Trump’s May 15 Executive Order 13783, appears in today’s Federal Register, kicking off a 30-day public comment period before the rule goes into effect. But Commerce, as officials have noted for months, can ban transactions...
