UK official describes benefits, potential need to regulate telecom sector for 5G security

Government may need to regulate operators of telecommunications networks in order to more comprehensively improve cybersecurity, according to an official providing a perspective from the United Kingdom.

“We are keen to raise the security standards overall in the telecoms networks,” said Paul Maddinson, counsellor for digital security at the British Embassy in Washington, DC, outlining the general principles guiding the UK's approach to the challenge of mitigating cyber threats.
