Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and two former GOP chairs of the committee are calling on House leaders to formalize the panel’s authority over the Department of Homeland Security in order to provide needed oversight and open the way to a first-time reauthorization of DHS.

A letter sent Thursday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was signed by Thompson and former Homeland Security chairs Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Peter King (R-NY).
