Senators strike bipartisan deal to punish Russia for hacking U.S. election

Senators have reached a bipartisan deal to impose additional sanctions on Russia for hacking the 2016 presidential election, with proponents of the measures saying they signal a unified congressional front in deterring future cyber attacks.

The announcement of the bipartisan deal comes amid news reports that Russia has developed a cyber “weapon” to target U.S. electric utilities, which has prompted the top Democrat on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to call for tougher actions against Russia.
