Senate Commerce panel discusses AI policy needs, including calls for privacy law

Lawmakers and witnesses alike agreed on the need for a federal privacy law as a cornerstone of the nation’s AI policy architecture, at a Tuesday Senate Commerce subcommittee hearing that delved into cybersecurity among a broad range of issues raised by artificial intelligence.

Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), chair of the consumer protection, product safety and data security subcommittee, said Congress needs to find ways to support innovation while addressing risks including AI-powered cyber attacks and fraud.
