Pentagon announces $600M in 5G experimentation and testing awards

The Pentagon is awarding $600 million to multiple companies to experiment and test fifth-generation wireless communications technologies at five U.S. military installations.

The awards are among the first under the Pentagon’s expansive 5G prototyping campaign, aimed at leveraging “dual-use” technologies with applicability to both military and commercial systems. They are just the beginning of the Pentagon’s 5G prototyping program, which is projected to cost nearly $1.7 billion between fiscal 2020-25, according to the Pentagon’s FY-21 budget documents.
