Painter: Cyber Command's moves on Russia send message; no sign of countermoves, yet

A U.S. cyber operation aimed at disrupting Russian plans to interfere in the midterm elections may involve more of a “message” to bad actors than actual offensive strikes, according to a former senior official, but even that would mark a significant new step in cybersecurity policy.

“We're short of details, but the message seems to be, 'We know it's you, we're watching you,'” Christopher Painter, who served as cyber coordinator in the State Department under President Obama, told Inside Cybersecurity....
