NIST’s Scholl details ‘tiered’ approach for migrating to post-quantum cryptography

The government’s migration to post-quantum cryptography will use a tiered approach based on sets of prioritized data, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Matthew Scholl.

Scholl said NIST is prioritizing protection of data that has requirements for “long-life confidentiality,” as well as high-impact and high-value data, in order to get it “transitioned and protected with the new algorithms by 2035.”

He explained there will be “lagging systems” for protecting less important data with quantum-resistant cryptography.
