NIST guidelines aim to prevent use of IoT devices as platform for cyber attacks

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is seeking comment on guidelines for preventing unauthorized access to connected “Internet of Things” consumer devices by malicious actors, for use in launching distributed denial of service attacks or other internet disruptions and privacy breaches.

The NIST “preliminary practice” guidelines issued today are laid out in Special Publication 1800-15 and are based on the “manufacture usage description” specifications developed by an engineering task force overseen by the agency. NIST is requesting comments...
