Huawei and ZTE are national security threats, FCC declares; rural telecom group criticizes immediate ban on use of USF funding

The Federal Communications Commission has designated Chinese tech and telecom firms Huawei and ZTE as national security threats, and will immediately prohibit use of the FCC’s Universal Service Fund to buy equipment or services from the companies.

“As a result of today’s action, money from the FCC’s $8.3 billion a year Universal Service Fund may no longer be used to purchase, obtain, maintain, improve, modify, or otherwise support any equipment or services produced or provided by these suppliers,” according to...
