House panel advances bipartisan bill setting national privacy standard, pledges ongoing negotiations on key elements

A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee today approved by voice vote legislation establishing federal standards around the privacy and security of consumer data, with lawmakers pledging to continue their bipartisan negotiations in areas including pre-emption of state laws and private right of action.

The subcommittee adopted a substitute amendment offered by Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) with the support of the panel’s Republicans. Pallone unveiled the updated language earlier this week.
