Energy-sector regulators criticized for promoting 'security through obscurity' in new white paper

Critics of a new white paper on settlement disclosures at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission say the proposal endangers progress made in cyber doctrine by giving credibility to a long-debunked narrative pitting transparency against security.

“This is a step backward,” Tom Popik, chairman and president of the Foundation for Resilient Societies, told Inside Cybersecurity Tuesday. “Cybersecurity professionals have recognized for decades that security through obscurity is an invalid concept, and yet it's now being promoted before FERC.”
