DOJ’s Demers: Moves to ban TikTok, WeChat target massive Chinese data collection effort

John Demers, national security chief at the Justice Department, says bans on TikTok and WeChat will help counter the Chinese government’s “appetite for large volumes of personal data” about U.S. citizens and others, as Beijing tries to leverage artificial intelligence as part of its espionage and national security strategy.
