Democratic bill directs Commerce secretary to promote secure IoT products with ‘Cyber Shield’ label

Legislation by Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) would create a voluntary labeling program for Internet of Things products, to be run out of the Commerce Department and informed by a new “Cyber Shield Advisory Committee” including industry, cybersecurity experts, public-interest advocates and federal officials.

Under the “Cyber Shield Act” legislation, the advisory committee would establish “benchmark” standards that IoT product makers would certify against, earning the right to display the label.
