CISA highlights comments to NTIA on benefits of ‘open’ AI foundation models

Policymakers considering the need for restrictions on the release of foundational open-weight artificial intelligence models should note ways in which traditional open-source software has, on balance, improved safety and security, according to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

“We have observed the benefits of open source tools in cybersecurity,” CISA says in a July 29 blog post flagging the agency’s June 18 comments to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration on the issue.
