California regulators scrap cyber regs on ‘self-diagnostic’ devices for automobiles

The California Department of Motor Vehicles, responding to backlash from industry, has eliminated a requirement that self-driving vehicles include “self-diagnostic capabilities” for cybersecurity in a revised proposal to regulate development and deployment of autonomous vehicles.

The California DMV unveiled updated proposed regulations on autonomous cars this month, following criticism from automakers and the tech industry that an earlier proposal failed to adequately address safety and security concerns, hinders innovation, and encroaches on federal authorities.
