FTC advises consumer product safety agency on IoT security

Reasonable data security practices are essential for protecting against physical “hazards” associated with devices on the Internet of Things, the Federal Trade Commission said in comments the agency filed with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Friday.

“Companies that manufacture and sell IoT devices must take reasonable steps to secure them from unauthorized access,” the FTC’s comments read. “Poorly-secured IoT devices create opportunities for attackers to assume device control, opening up risks that may include safety hazards.”
