NHTSA issues vehicle cybersecurity guidance based on NIST framework, industry practices

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Monday issued highly anticipated guidance for cybersecurity in automobiles, outlining a risk-based, “layered” approach to cybersecurity drawing from stakeholder feedback, the federal framework of cybersecurity standards, and industry-issued best practices.

“In the constantly changing environment of technology and cybersecurity, no single or static approach is sufficient, said NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind in a statement. “Everyone involved must keep moving, adapting, and improving to stay ahead of the bad guys.”
