FTC may modify data safeguarding rule to reference cybersecurity standards

The Federal Trade Commission is seeking comment on whether cybersecurity standards such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology cybersecurity framework or the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards should be included in updates to a rule requiring financial institutions to establish comprehensive information security programs for consumer data.

The FTC is seeking comment on its “Safeguards Rule” as part of a “systematic review of all FTC rules and guides,” according to a notice from the commission.
