FCC's Wheeler flags cybersecurity needs in new '5G' proposal

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Thomas Wheeler has crafted a proposal to encourage “fifth generation” wireless networks that will include an emphasis on industry-crafted cybersecurity standards and ongoing collaboration between the FCC and the telecom sector.

The FCC sees 5G as the foundation for rapid advances in the Internet of Things, and commission officials say they are trying to get ahead of the curve on related security issues.
