Industry calls for ‘balanced’ cybersecurity requirements for automobiles

Representatives from the transportation sector and Department of Transportation officials stressed to lawmakers Tuesday that cybersecurity standards for automobiles and other Internet of Things devices are needed, but they should offer flexibility to maintain innovation and allow new safety-enhancing technology to be deployed.

During a Senate Commerce transportation subcommittee hearing, stakeholders testified that automobiles should have mandatory cybersecurity standards -- defined in a way that encourages innovation and success of the IoT, rather than inhibits it.
